Playsession Term 2 Newsletter
THE SESSION
Hello everyone. Our playsession is well into term 2 and still very busy. We would like to go through some of our activities with you all so you fully understand what we offer to your little ones.
Baby corner: With the overall numbers increasing, the numbers of 0 to 18 months old babies is increasing as well. So in the last month we have put more thought into our baby corner and are introducing a section for gross motor development and a quiet discovery section. The gross motor section includes: • Baby slide • tunnels • cushions • Balls to roll over (coming) • Big boxes to hide in
The discovery section includes: • Matts with themes such as matching shapes, colours, animals • Bright toys, mirrors (acrylic only!) • Pop up toys • Rattles • Textured toys
We also have on order, a new long clear tunnel and two new baby matts for inside and outside.
Dramatic play You have probably noticed that every week we rotate the set up in our second room which we have called 'Dramatic Play'. It includes:
Home corner, coffee shop With kitchen equipment, babies to feed, food to cook. Of course all pretend! Along with so much to do, children can view posters displaying numbers, colours, shapes and food groups. All great ways to get familiar with their environment and for the older kids, for their readiness for school.
Hospital Band-aids to stick, babies to put to bed and potions to mix in the hospital. Posters display the body parts and skeleton - a great way for children to discover their bodies.
Office, supermarket Telephone to answer, keyboards to type, boxes to pile. The posters in this play area show world maps and numbers to add a touch of geography along with counting.
Science Magnets, scales, puzzles, books, magnifying glass, matching shapes. These activities are more suitable for older kids....fascinating!
Dress Up So much to chose from! Super heroes, fairies, witches, firemen, high heels, princesses, Chinese outfit, Spanish dress... along with pictures of children dressed in their original costumes from around the world. It's all about multiculturalism.
Remember, with the participation and interaction of an adult with the child, every activity can be educational! So don't be shy and please get involved. We love watching grandmothers having cups of tea with their grandchildren in the cafe, dads doing the shopping in the supermarket or mum with an arm in a sling in the hospital! Keep it up.
LOST PROPERTY
Make sure you check the lost property on the table in the first room where you register. We accumulate so many drink bottles, hats, shoes and jumpers and we clean it all out at the end of every term, so check it out before it is gone for ever!
STAFF VOLUNTEERS RATIO
You may have noticed we have increased our staff and volunteer ratio to deal with the ever increasing numbers. On Monday, Wednesday and Thursday we have two full time playleaders, one casual and one or two volunteers. Tuesday, we have two full time playleaders and one or two volunteers.
We are dedicated to our job and want to insure a high standard is kept and quality time is given to all of our members.
Saying that, we still need your help in keeping the place pleasant for everyone who visits our session, so please make sure you leave stations tidy before you go. For example: Puzzles unfinished and left on the floor need to be placed back on the puzzle table completed. All paintbrushes in one pot of paint to be put back in their respective pots. Sandpit toys left inside need to be put back outside.
We understand little ones are not able to complete or fully tidy an activity so that is why we ask the adults to help! We'll do as much as we can, but with numbers over 100 children per session it is vital adults participate to keep the place to an acceptable standard. Also, make sure empty coffee cups and rubbish are put in either of the two big bins outside or the small bin inside next to the sign in table. Thank you for your co-operation.
FAREWELL
A lot of you already know that Ben will be leaving us soon to live in Ireland. We are organising a farewell diner in a Thai restaurant in Crows Nest Thursday 12th of June, at 7.30pm, the exact details to follow soon. The playgroup staff and some of our volunteers will be going so if you wish to join us, please let Rosemary, Corinne or Ben know so we can book the numbers. It will be a fun night.
