Portrait Painting

In this one-day workshop Melanie Waugh will discuss and demonstrate techniques of portrait painting. This course explores basic techniques that you can use to improve your work, and will introduce you to skills that will enable you to continue developing your portrait painting outside of class.

Using acrylic or oil paint the workshop will focus on proportion, tone, colour, capturing facial characteristics and mark making. This class is open to anyone with an interest in learning portraiture. You’ll receive plenty of guidance and friendly feedback as we explore the human head from a model.

This Portrait Painting workshop begins by introducing students to the basic shape of the head and how to find accurate proportions. Through blocking in using large bold shapes and eliminating any detail making the beginning process much easier.  We will work from a live model which helps when learning to see and build the three dimensional form when under a time constraint.
