Expressive Painting: Painting with Colour and Light

Have you always wanted to paint but don’t know where to begin? Whether you are a beginner or have experience, this class is designed to develop your individual painting style. The tutor explains and demonstrates the essential techniques of painting in a logical and simple way. Learn how to choose the composition of a painting, develop your drawing skills, mix colours, the application of paint and how to capture dynamic light and shade. In a relaxed and social environment, develop a variety of skills to build confidence in your own ability as an artist.

Course details:

Week 1: Overview of the course including subjects. Preparation of the canvas. Laying down a ground, composition, how to enlarge the subject and draw it on your canvas and under painting.

Week 2: How colour, tones, tints and shades work to create dimension and depth in the painting.

Week 3: The different brushes and other equipment used to make marks in the painting process, blending, drybrush, glazing, texture and opaque techniques demonstrated.

Week 4 until the end of the term: Onwards, individual tuition to support the student bring the painting to a successful conclusion.

*Students will also be expected to assist their tutor in a post-course clean down of the room & anything used during this time. Please understand we are putting in strict protocols across the board to ensure the safety of our entire community.

Tutor: Scott Owen

After completing a BFA at the National Art School in 2015 Scott Owen has spent the last five years exhibiting work and developing his painting practice. Predominantly focused on still life and the landscape Scott works in a range of media and specialises in oil painting. He was a finalist in the 2019 Eutick Memorial Still Life Award and has works in private collections all around Australia.
