Wool is the perfect textile for the family home.
Not only is it flame retardant and dirt resistant, it’s also hypo-allergenic, making it resistant to bacteria and mildew and very unattractive to dust mites. It also absorbs harmful pollutants from the air and has been estimated, when used in interiors, can help purify the air for 30 years!!!
Just as well there are plenty of wonderfully stylish handmade felt projects you can make for your home. Gill will take you through the fundamentals of the felt-making technique, including different types of wool and their usage, along with how to create your own unique designs in wool and how to embed other fibres and textiles into the wool during the lay out process.
Project options on the day include: placemats, table runners, cushion covers, cup holders and vessels. Felt is a very forgiving medium, perfect for the would-be maker unconvinced of their creative ability. You will be surprised and delighted with what you can make using this wonderfully eco-friendly, sustainable and 100% biodegradable fibre.
2 x old bath towels 1 x pair of fabric scissors Elbow grease – some moderate repetitive actions required. Bring a handle-less mug or glass if you’d like to make it a felt jumper.
Mad keen on textiles from an early age, Gill experimented with everything under the sun: dyeing, sewing, embroidery, knitting, rug-making, you name it. In 1994, she attended her first felt-making workshop and that was it. She had found her perfect medium and has been felting ever since. Over the years, Gill has attended many workshops, often with the who’s who of the international felting world, including Jorie Johnson, Marjolein Dalinga, Alexander Pillin and Jeanette Appleton. Gill has been teaching workshops since 2002 and has introduced hundreds to the joys of felt-making and the versatilities of handmade felt. Gill designs and makes one of a kind accessories which she sells through various handmade craft shop and galleries. Her work has been featured in a variety of magazines including Vogue Living and Home Beautiful. ‘I’m continuously inspired by this extra-ordinarily versatile medium, it’s wonderful properties and its amazing history. A never-ending world of possibilities. What’s not to love.’’
