African Dance

African dance is a dynamic and uplifting dance style. This workshop introduces the basics of West African traditional dance and how rhythm and dance fit together. Wear comfortable clothing and dance barefoot. Be ready for high energy fun - all levels of dancers welcome.

Rachel Bangoura

With a background of various dance forms including Ballet and Jazz, Rachel has studied West African dance extensively over the last 17 years both in Guinea, West Africa and in Australia. Her teachers included Sekouba Camara (Director – Ballet Matam, Guinea); Nema Camara (Les Ballets Africannes); Aminata Conde (Ballet Matam); Epizo Bangoura (Guinea); Mory Traore (Guinea); Lucky Lartey (Ghana) ; Fode Mane (Senegal). Having taught in Australia for over 15 years, she has unique skills as a teacher with an ability to translate to Western students the complexity of traditional choreographies and rhythms. An extremely talented and dedicated teacher, Rachel reaches out to students of all levels to encourage them to embrace the freedom and joy of West African dance. Rachel is now entrepreneur of world music projects. She is currently Directing a leading school of African Drum & Dance in Australia – Douniya – African Drum & Dance Sydney; Director of multicultural schools arts program – Drum Safari; Manager of the popular Sydney based African band Keyim Ba and Director of Sydney’s annual West African Festival.
