Stallholder Features: The Vege Box + Taj Mahal Fine Foods

During 2019, Northside Produce Market celebrates its 20th year of trading. We couldn’t have done it without all of the dedicated North Sydney Community Centre staff and volunteers, our wonderful customers and of course all of our fabulous stallholders. Throughout the year we will feature some of the stallholders so that you can discover a little more of their story.

Stallholder: The Vege Box

This year marks Shane Roberts 10th year of running The Vege Box stall at Northside Produce Market. His connection to Northside goes back even further, over 15 years ago when he and his wife Amanda previously ran The Sprout Growers stall selling organic bean sprouts. His aim is to represent a cross section of the freshest and tastiest seasonal produce, sourced locally and curated especially for each market. ‘We work directly with local farmers to get their best produce each fortnight to North Sydney, as well as filling the gaps with the finest produce sourced from along the eastern seaboard. Over the 12 months of the year we offer the best of what is in season each fortnight. We supply vegetables to some of Sydney’s finest cafes and restaurants, working closely with chefs, but we especially love working with the enthusiastic home cooks who frequent our stand at Northside. We love the interaction with our customers, the feedback they give us on the produce we source and sell, as well as sharing cooking tips and favourite recipes. Our stand has become a hub for foodies to swap tips and ideas, and a real sense of community has developed around us as a result. Chris and I love hearing what our customers do with our produce each fortnight.’

Stallholder: Taj Mahal Fine Food

‘Dhiren Pillay’s family run business started in 1984 by his parents who immigrated from Durban, South Africa and was originally started as a bakery making pies, bread rolls and other pastries. In 1999, Dhiren joined the business and started to change it into a spice manufacturer also making rotis, samosas and curries. Today 20 years later, Taj Mahal Fine Food’s Tandoori has won several awards and is one of the best on the market. They were featured on SBS Food Safaris on the South African episode - season 4, episode 5 and supply most of the South African butchers and Delis in Sydney with their products. Dhiren attends 6 major food and produce markets and regards the Northside Produce Market is one of Sydney’s best. ‘It has a wonderful variety of fresh produce and a lot of the stall holders are the farmers or growers of the produce they sell. I have been a stall holder at this market for 18 years and it continues to grow and evolve.’
