During 2019, Northside Produce Market celebrates it’s 20th year of trading. We couldn’t have done it without all of the dedicated North Sydney Community Centre staff and volunteers, our wonderful customers and of course all of our fabulous stallholders. Throughout the year we will feature some of the stallholders so that you can discover a little more of their story.
‘Pepe Saya’ was conceived by Pierre Issa when he wanted to create a true Australian cultured butter having crafted milk and cream into many of his desserts in his business Homemade Finefoods. Having developed a relationship with local dairy Country Valley from Picton in sourcing the best milk and cream and using the finest sea salt from Olson’s in the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia, the Pepe Saya Butter Co was born in 2010. This now famous butter can be found served in top restaurants across the country, on board Qantas flights and soon over seas in Hong Kong. We are proud to have Pepe Saya as a regular stall on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month at Northside Produce Market bringing their retail range. Our customers love being able to experience the Pepe Saya products at home and as Pierre says “everything tastes better with butter!”.
As a young boy, Kerry Connole would visit his grandparents, in the late 1940's to early 1950's at their 24sqm adjoining bakery with a large wood fired oven, in Bellata, NSW. On a trip back to the town in 1997, Kerry found the bakery rundown and abandoned. He began to dream of restoring it to its former glory with the help of his sons, Andrew and Christian. He leased out the old bakery and started to restore it with his sons and the world-renowned oven designer, Alan Scott. In 1998 Andrew flew to San Francisco, where he stayed with Alan Scott and learned from Chad Roberston (Tartine Bakery). On his return home, he took what he learned and convinced his father that they should make naturally fermented sourdough, Northern Californian style and so Sonoma was born. Since 2013 Sonoma has been coming to Northside Produce Market. Their signature breads Miche and Mission are the customers favourite and the morning bun is the indispensable companion to everyone’s coffee.
