Moonacres Farm

Stallholder: Moonacres Farm

Gaining organic certification was always part of the plan for Phil Lavers, who purchased his Fitzroy Falls farm in the Southern Highlands in 1998. “I was living in Tokyo with my family and during that time we had a farm manager and went through the organic certification process” he explains. “We moved onto the farm in 2006 and I’ve been running it ever since.” Moonacres Farm has gone onto receive many awards for his organically grown produce.

Along with all the usual vegetables you’d expect, Moonacres Farm also grows fruit and less well known produce such as Fennel flowers, an array salad leaves such as Red Elk and Kohlrabi – a vegetable from the cabbage family. “Kohlrabi has a slight hint of radish and a real depth of flavour – it can be eaten raw or cooked, so it has great versatility,” says Phil. “It’s popular with our Northside customers.”

In his 15th year at Northside Produce Market, Phil says “we are fortunate to have a very loyal customer base – I can almost set my watch according to when some customers arrive”.
