Sewing, Knitting & Crochet for Animals Injured in Bushfires

THIS EVENT IS NOW AT CAPACITY BUT WE ARE ACCEPTING FABRIC, WOOL & CRAFT DONATIONS - SEE BELOW FOR MORE INFO.

ABOUT THE EVENT

Anna Kellerman from Mama Collectives and our Director Joanna Goodwin have teamed up to put together an incredible event to help animals that have been injured in the recent & devastating bushfires. Gathering together to knit, sew and crochet to make products that help animal rescue, specifically injured & burnt wildlife from bushfires.

We know a lot are people are feeling overwhelmed and powerless about the bushfire situation in Australia, but here is a creative way you can directly help make a difference.

The purpose of this event is to get together as a community and make a difference with our collective creative talent and time to support The Animal Rescue Craft Guild, also comprised of The Rescue Collective and Animal Rescue Collective (ARC), alongside many rescue groups helping the firezones across 5 states, backed by a registered charity (MKC). 100% volunteer run.

Currently half a billion animals have perished in the bushfires and many are injured and need intensive care. This group coordinates the making and supply of craft items that can be used by animal rescues to care for fire injured wildlife right now.

They’ve got 1000s of bats, koalas, possums etc. coming into care with huge call outs of craft items. Working day and night. Anyone can join this group on Facebook to make joey pouches, bat wraps, crocheted birds nests, sugar glider pouches and more.

If you can knit, sew or crochet please come and join us at our event to help make much needed craft items for injured wildlife, and also help instruct other people who will need some guidance. The more the merrier. Beginners welcome - we may also need cutters, sorters and packers.

Once you know what and how to make these items you can then make them at home and in your own networks.

If you can please bring in your knitting and crochet needles, sewing machines, any materials as itemised below.

WHAT WE WILL MAKE - ONLY USING SPECIFIC PATTERNS FROM THE GUILD.

Sewers: Joey pouches, hanging joey pouches, quilts and blankets. No hand sewn items.

Crocheters: Birds nests, blankets, joey pouch outers, animal jumpers.

Knitters: Blankets, joey pouch outers, animal jumpers.

FABRIC, WOOL, CRAFT DONATIONS CALL OUT

If you can't make this event we can accept donations to be used on the day and anything leftover we can deliver to the guild directly.

Example of what we will need:

Natural fabric, eg Cotton, flannelette, polar fleece, wool, jersey, sweatshirt material, etc. Poly blends and synthetics are OK. Yarn, wool, 8-10ply - acrylic ok. 5 to 5.5mm hook, knitting needles.
