North Sydney Community Centre

Painting Tutor

We have an opening for a Painting Tutor to teach Expressive Painting with Colour & Light, adult group classes at North Sydney Community Centre, to commence with the next term of on-site classes (a full term in Term 1, 2022).

This class is usually run for 8 weeks, x4 times per year (aligned with school terms), on Monday evenings, 6:30-8:30pm.

Previous teaching experience preferred.

Contract position. Fees negotiable, contact us for details.

The class contains a mix of continuing students and beginner students, working mainly in acrylics. (Oils are also an option – but need to be managed carefully in terms of waste and fumes).

Students and the Tutor from this class also participate in the annual Student & Tutor Exhibition, usually held in November each year. And there may be opportunities for class group exhibitions at the Centre throughout the year.

North Sydney Community Centre has provided an adult learning programme since the 1970s, encouraging community and social connection and wellbeing through skills development and participation in arts, culture, and fitness and lifestyle classes. Our tutors are just as much a part of our vibrant community as our students. We are an independent, not-for-profit centre.

We are looking for a community minded, patient and enthusiastic teacher, who enjoys working with a diverse range of people of different backgrounds, ages and abilities, to facilitate appreciation, skills development and the enjoyment of painting.

Below is the current class description, but note that the new tutor is also able to bring their own program and content ideas to this class.

Expressive Painting: Painting With Colour & Light Current Class Description:

Find confidence in the painting process as you develop adaptability and skill.

Have you always wanted to paint but don’t know where to begin? Whether you are a beginner or have experience, this class is designed to develop your individual painting style. Your tutor explains and demonstrates the essential techniques of painting in a logical and simple way. Learn how to choose the composition of a painting, develop your drawing skills, mix colours, the application of paint and how to capture dynamic light and shade. In a relaxed and social environment, develop a variety of skills to build confidence in your own ability as an artist.

Course details: We will study the work of Australian painters like Albert Namatjira, Arthur Streeton, Margaret Preston, E. Phillips Fox and Grace Cossington Smith, who were all exciting painters with very individual styles. In addition, painters like Euan Uglow, Henri Matisse, Claude Monet and Lois Dodd will provide inspiration – and suggestions from students are very welcome. We will break down the process into steps, learning about constructing form and depth, underpainting, sketching, composition, palette (choice of colour), tonal contrast, layering, the use of different brushes for various purposes, correcting or changing elements, making decisions, and final details. Along the way, students will find they have more confidence in the painting process as they develop adaptability and skill.

The tutor will walk you through painting exercises, assist in the creation of your own body of work and act as a consultant if students wish to pursue their own projects.
