Woodwork 101: Make a Handcrafted Wooden Box for Christmas

Looking for a meaningful gift or just want to create something beautiful for yourself this festive season?
Join us for a hands-on introduction to woodworking where you’ll make a handcrafted wooden box, perfect as a keepsake, storage box, or heartfelt Christmas present.
Boxes are the fundamental woodworking project. Whether it's a small keepsake box, a breadbox, or the base for future furniture-making, learning how to build a box gives you the skills and confidence to take on a wide range of woodworking projects.
What You Will Learn
Using pre-machined timber and basic hand tools, you will learn how to:

Cut timber to size by hand

Create traditional rebated joints

Fit a base and lid
-
Sand your box for a smooth finish
-
Apply traditional, eco-friendly wood stains and finishes
This workshop focuses on using simple tools (easily found at any hardware store) and traditional methods, making it perfect for beginners.
Along the way, you will also learn:

How to choose and prepare timber

The basics of cutting, planing, and sanding

How to apply traditional shellac and food-safe finishes
By the end of the day, you will take home a beautifully finished wooden box and the skills to start your own DIY woodworking projects.

We will be using:

Traditional shellac
All materials and tools will be supplied, but feel free to bring your own if you prefer.

About the tutor
David Searson
David lives in St Leonards, is an active member of the Woodworkers Association of NSW, and has a small work space in Artarmon.
Living in a Sydney apartment himself, David will be focused on teaching people how to use basic tools, understand timber that's readily available locally, and how to cut, carve, sand, polish, and use tradtional finishes to create beautiful and lasting peices that you'll be proud to show to friends and family.
David makes pieces of all sorts - his food-related items like cutting boards, spatulas, baker's tools etc are on sale at the Northside Produce Markets. Over many decades, he has also made things like a spinning wheel, several tables, various boxes, kitchen cupboards, book-binders tools, carved spoons, a Norwegian Fiddle, and he does the occasional restoration of antiques.
