Woodwork for Beginners - Rustic Tray from Upcycled Materials (Workshop)

Course Overview

Turn reclaimed timber and found objects into a one-of-a-kind wooden tray in this hands-on beginner-friendly workshop.

Guided step-by-step, you’ll learn how to work safely and creatively with salvaged materials while building something both functional and full of character.

What You’ll Learn
  • How to work safely and creatively with reclaimed timber

  • Cutting timber to size using hand saws

  • Simple techniques to add age, patina, and colour to wood

  • Basic assembly using glue and a nail gun

  • Creative reuse of everyday objects as functional features (yes, fork and spoon handles!)

  • Wood burning and decorative finishing techniques

What You’ll Make
  • A unique, custom wooden tray for the kitchen, barbecue, or charcuterie

  • A functional piece with vintage-inspired charm

  • A tray that reflects your own creativity, no two will be the same

Tools and Materials
  • All timber, salvaged pieces, glue, nails, and found objects are provided

  • Students are welcome to bring small items to incorporate into their tray if they wish

Clothing and Safety
  • Please wear sturdy closed-toe shoes

  • Avoid loose sleeves

  • Follow safety guidance when using hand saws, nail guns, and wood-burning tools

On the Day

David will guide you through selecting your materials, cutting and assembling your tray, and adding finishing touches. You’ll explore creative ways to age, colour, and personalise your piece, while gaining hands-on experience with simple hand and power tools in a safe, supportive environment.

David Searson

David lives in St Leonards, is an active member of the Woodworkers Association of NSW, and has a small work space in Artarmon.

Living in a Sydney apartment himself, David will be focused on teaching people how to use basic tools, understand timber that's readily available locally, and how to cut, carve, sand, polish, and use tradtional finishes to create beautiful and lasting peices that you'll be proud to show to friends and family. 

David makes pieces of all sorts - his food-related items like cutting boards, spatulas, baker's tools etc are on sale at the Northside Produce Markets. Over many decades, he has also made things like a spinning wheel, several tables, various boxes, kitchen cupboards, book-binders tools, carved spoons, a Norwegian Fiddle, and he does the occasional restoration of antiques.
