After School Care Staff

Job Overview

North Sydney Community Centre OOSH is a not for profit community based After School Care service, located in North Sydney Community Centre.

The aim of After School Care is to provide a stimulating and caring environment for children 5 – 12 years and their families. Both structured and unstructured activities are provided, the emphasis being on free play. Children are encouraged to be independent and responsible within the group. Parents and the school are encouraged to be involved.

The After School Care assistant must work co-operatively with the other workers to:
  • Ensure the effective co-ordination of activities.
  • Ensure all staff are adequately informed about the children.
  • Communicate with parents and ensure staff are aware of their feedback.

With other staff, plan and prepare the After School Care program to include a wide range of stimulating activities, both structured and unstructured.

  • Prepare, organise and carry out at least two structured activities with the children each week.
  • Prepare afternoon tea for the children each day.
  • Collect the children each day from the North Sydney Demonstration School, recording attendances and notifying staff if children do not arrive.
  • Supervise children while playing both indoors and outdoors.
  • Leave the Centre clean and tidy and assist staff in preparing rooms for evening classes.
  • Document daily report and attend After School Care meetings when required.
  • Be familiar with general office procedures and assist as necessary.
  • Organisational and team-work skills.
  • Physically fit: must be physically fit and strong, with enough stamina to be active throughout the afternoon. Many of the activities require some physical effort, for example moving furniture and equipment, carrying items, sweeping and cleaning and standing for up to 4 hours.
Essential criteria
  • Must have a Working With Children Check.
  • Must have experience working with school aged children.
Desirable experience
  • Experience working in an OOSH environment.
  • Good communication skills, verbal and written.
  • First Aid Certificate and Child Protection Certificates or willingness to obtain.
