German Advanced Beginners

Course Overview

Build confidence, expand your grammar and move from single sentences to real conversations.

This course is designed for learners who already know the basics - introducing themselves, counting and using simple present‑tense verbs - and are ready to take the next step toward more fluid, everyday communication.

The focus is on strengthening transition grammar, expanding core vocabulary, and developing the ability to speak in longer, more natural sentences.

Across the term, we will work through essential grammar topics including:
  • Conversational past tense using haben and sein with regular and irregular verbs

  • Modal verbs such as können, müssen, wollen, sollen, dürfen, and möchten in the present tense

  • Dative verbs like helfen and danken, and

  • Dative prepositions including mit, zu, and aus

Grammar is always taught in context, through practical, real‑life scenarios such as:

  • Scheduling a doctor’s appointment

  • Navigating train stations and buying tickets

  • Booking accommodation

  • Ordering at restaurants with specific requests

  • Handling payments and shopping

To build confidence with rhythm, word order and past‑tense forms, we will also listen to short excerpts from well‑known German songs and poems, such as Tage wie diese and 99 Luftballons, using them as fun, memorable language tools.

By the end of the course, students will feel more comfortable forming connected sentences, understanding everyday interactions, and expressing themselves with greater ease.
