Course Overview
Take the next step in your Japanese language to enhance your Japanese Conversational Skills
This course helps you to develop your fluency and conversation skills in a range of contexts and builds your vocabulary to the next level which allow you to have a greater experience and appreciation of the culture and its people. So, you can gain confidence in your Japanese conversational skills.
Students with any foundational understanding of Japanese are very welcome to join this course.
Every week we will have fun activities practicing Japanese language skills and each week will focus on a different topic of your choice for a discussion.
Course Breakdown
Week 1: Revision of the material previously covered through situational dialogues and organising weekly discussion topic(s)
Week 2: Situational dialogues; inviting people to your home, offering food
Discussion Topic 1
Week 3: Situational dialogues; describing things around you
Discussion Topic 2
Week 4: Situational dialogues; sharing your experiences
Discussion Topic 3
Week 5: Situational dialogues; asking and expressing opinions
Discussion Topic 4
Week 6: Situational dialogues; talking about future plans
Discussion Topic 5
Week 7: Situational dialogues; comparing things

Week 8: Situational dialogues; respecting others: uchi to soto

2026 Term Dates
Term 1 runs from Tuesday 3 February to Tuesday 24 March
Term 2 runs from Tuesday 28 April to Tuesday 16 June
Term 3 runs from Tuesday 28 July to Tuesday 15 September
Term 4 runs from Tuesday 20 October to Tuesday 8 December
Materials
Please bring a pen, paper and a bottle of water.
Outcomes
After this 8-week course, students will be able to confidently communicate in Japanese and engage in conversations, using present, past, conditional and future tenses to describe events and express opinions.
Students will also have a deeper understanding of wide range of Japanese culture and customs through historical eyes.

About the tutor
Motoko Christensen
Hello - I am Motoko, I was born in Tokyo, Japan, and came to Sydney where I studied linguistics and education. I completed a BA DipEd and Master of Applied Linguistic at Macquarie University and obtained my PhD from UNSW.My passion for teaching Japanese reflects a long-standing history of teaching that spans more than 40 years, both in Australia as well as overseas. I have a wide range of teaching backgrounds: from pre-school age to university students and mature aged adults. I love traveling, cooking, watching movies, music, yoga and the list goes on!In my class, students can relax and be encouraged to participate as the classes are interactive, focusing on students’ motivation and well-being!
