Take the next step in your Japanese language and culture course with our Beginners Next Step Course, offering a seamless transition from our popular Discover Japan: Language and Culture for the Beginners
This course helps you to develop your fluency and conversation skills in a range of contexts and builds your vocabulary to the next level which allow you to have a greater experience and appreciation of the culture and its people. So, your next trip to Japan will be more exciting and you will be able to discover more hidden parts of Japan as well.
Students with any foundational understanding of Japanese are also very welcome to join this course.
Every week we’ll have fun activities practicing Japanese language skills and each week will focus on different but interesting parts of Japanese culture.
Course Breakdown: For Cultural Aspects:
Week 1: Revision of the material previously covered and introduction to Japanese verbs. Fun activities speaking in Japanese and the way we use our hands
Week 2: Japanese Ainu & Burakumin
Week 3 & 4: Kabuki, Bunraku, Not, Kyogen, Rakugo and Owarai.
Week 5: Japanese songs and traditional musical instruments
Week 6: Japanese customs and traditions
Week 7: Japanese Food, enjoying ‘Shun no mono’
Week 8: Japanese art
This outline provides an overview of what may be covered during the course; however, changes may occur based on various factors and the needs of the class.
Term Dates
Term 3 runs from Tuesday 22 July to Tuesday 9 September
Term 4 runs from Tuesday 14 October to Tuesday 2 December
Outcomes
After this course, students will start to build up some grammatical knowledge and will be able to communicate in basic but effective ways with limited knowledge of Japanese language. Students will also have a deeper understanding of wide range of Japanese culture and customs through historical eyes.

Hello - I am Motoko, I was born in Tokyo, Japan, and came to Sydney where I studied linguistics and education. I completed a BA DipEd and Master of Applied Linguistic at Macquarie University and obtained my PhD from UNSW.My passion for teaching Japanese reflects a long-standing history of teaching that spans more than 40 years, both in Australia as well as overseas. I have a wide range of teaching backgrounds: from pre-school age to university students and mature aged adults. I love traveling, cooking, watching movies, music, yoga and the list goes on!In my class, students can relax and be encouraged to participate as the classes are interactive, focusing on students’ motivation and well-being!
