Sustainability Practices
Our Sustainability Practices
At North Sydney Community Centre, we are committed to reducing our environmental footprint through thoughtful daily practices, long-term initiatives and ongoing community education. Our approach focuses on minimising waste, conserving energy and fostering a culture of reuse and conscious consumption. We aim to lead by example and empower our community to live more sustainably.
Our actions include:
- Accredited annually through the Better Business Partnership since 2013
- Conscious energy use with efforts to minimise unnecessary consumption
- Promotion of reusable items (keep cups, Green Caffeen, reusable crockery)
- Shredded paper reused in children’s programming and given to the community for compost
- Reduction of printed materials using QR codes and digital info sharing
- Sourcing ethical and sustainable catering partners
- Preference for local and recycled-content products in purchasing
- Repair and reuse of damaged furniture and equipment
- Pen and e-waste recycling (Officeworks, Arnies Recon)
- Free book swap initiatives for novels and cookbooks
- Sustainability-themed workshops (zero waste crafts, clothing repair, beekeeping, bike maintenance)
- Support for sustainability education via school holiday and after-school programs
- Minimal use of heating, lighting and fans; outdoor activity encouraged
- Collaboration with sustainability-driven NFPs and community groups
- “Mug for a Mug” library at Playgroup and Market to reduce single-use cups
