Across four creative weeks, you’ll build the essential foundations of painting - composition, tonal value, colour mixing and a full suite of expressive watercolour techniques including wet‑on‑wet, wet‑on‑dry, washes, dry brushing, glazing and splattering.
You’ll learn how to choose strong subjects, create quick sketches to plan your compositions and confidently apply the techniques you’ve learned to complete a finished painting each week. Reference images will be provided, but you’re encouraged to bring your own inspiration to personalise your work.
This course is perfect for anyone wanting to build skills, explore creativity and enjoy the magic of watercolour in a relaxed, supportive environment.

Weekly Breakdown

Week 1: Watercolour Basics - Explore materials and core techniques. Practise washes, graded washes, dry brush, wet‑on‑dry and wet‑on‑wet. Create a simple tonal landscape using your new skills.

Week 2: Colour & Technique Expansion - Learn colour theory, mixing, variegated washes, splattering and lifting. Finish with a vibrant still‑life painting.

Week 3: Composition & Creative Choice - Bring your own references and work through composition planning together. Create a landscape or choose your own subject.

Shelly Du
Shelly Du is a Sydney-based artist and art tutor. She has exhibited across Sydney and won several awards in both watercolour and acrylic in the past years, including the first prize with watercolour painting in Lane Cove Art Society exhibition and second prize in watercolour in Combined Art societies of Sydney. Shelly has sold 500 paintings to collectors in 14 different countries and has been invited as exhibition judge.
Shelly has been teaching acrylic painting at North Sydney Community Center since 2022. Her recent “Animals and wildlife with Watercolour” workshop is highly appreciated by participants.
