Italian Beginners Level 2 (Friday)

Course Overview

This fun and practical course is perfect for those who have some prior knowledge of Italian and who want to continue to build on their Italian skills.

You'll learn how to communicate in everyday situations through interactive activities that build your confidence and introduce you to the rich culture of Italy.

Each week will focus on essential grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation to help you understand and use common expressions. By the end of the course, you’ll be able to greet people, introduce yourself, order at a café or restaurant.

Lessons are engaging and supportive, using games, role-play, audio-visual materials, and conversation practice to make learning enjoyable. The course also weaves in cultural insights to deepen your understanding and appreciation of Italian life.

This term, we will focus on Unit 4:

Unit 4 of the Dieci A1 Italian textbook, titled "Casa e albergo", covers vocabulary for home environments, hotel types, and basic travel accommodations. It introduces descriptive adjectives and regular and irregular verbs in the present tense.

To start Unit 4 of the Dieci A1 textbook, you should be able to

·      Introduce yourself giving personal information using the verb “essere, chiamarsi, abitare”

·      Be comfortable conjugating regular verbs of present tense (especially -are verbs), and the essential irregular verbs like to be (essere), to have (avere), to do/make (fare),  to go (andare), and using the prepositions “a, di, in, con, per;

·      Be familiar with food and drink vocabulary: know how to order at a bar or restaurant and ask for specific items (e.g., a coffee, a croissant, a sandwich);

·      You will also need to know basic numbers.

Topics include:

In Dieci A1 (Unit 4), the theme focuses on homes and accommodation. The core objective is learning to describe living spaces.

 Course Breakdown:

Week 1, 2 :

Review key points units 1, 2 Dieci A1 through guided conversation and practical exercises.

Week 4, 5, 6,7:

  • Places to Stay & Types of Homes:

Learn vocabulary for different types of accommodations (appartamento, villetta, hotel, ostello).

·      Describing a Home. Focus: Adjectives and descriptions.

Topics: Learn adjectives to describe living spaces (grande, piccolo, economico, caro, silenzioso, luminoso).

·      Grammar : Regular verbs ending in -ire (third conjugation): to sleep, to finish; irregular verbs: to go, to come, to have to; adverbs: very and little; plural adjectives; demonstrative adjective "this"; indefinite pronouns: something, someone, nothing, no one.

Focus: Functional communication and listening.

Activities: Describe where you prefer to stay on vacation or business.

Activities: Practice booking a hotel room or making requests, e.g., "Vorrei una camera doppia."

Activities: Listen to dialogs and watch the Episode 4 video course and grammar.

Week  8:

Revision key point unit 4 through guided conversation, role-play, and videos.

Materials:

We recommend the textbook Dieci A1 (Alma Edizioni) along with a notebook and pen.

  • Note: We recommend purchasing the textbook after the class is confirmed to be running by the Centre.
Term Dates 

Term 1 runs from Friday 6 February to Friday 27 March 

Term 2 runs from Friday 24 April to Friday 26 June (10 week course)

Term 3 runs from Friday 24 July  to Friday 11 September 

Term 4 runs from Friday 16 October to Friday 4 December

 Students who participate in this course will receive a 50% discount at Ridge Street Car Park. Simply speak to our team when you visit the Centre, and we’ll register your plate number in our system (please note you’ll need to register your plate each time you attend the course). This discount applies to courses held at the Centre during office hours (Monday to Friday, 10 am to 5 pm).

Lara Toffolon

My name is Lara. I’m originally from the Venice area and have been living in Sydney since 2015. I hold both Italian and Australian citizenship.

I’ve been working as an Italian tutor for the past seven years, collaborating with a local language school and teaching both group classes and one-to-one lessons, in person and online. I create dedicated lesson plans to support learners at all levels in a positive, engaging, and motivating atmosphere. My teaching is interactive and student-focused, drawing on a wide range of materials, online platforms, and digital resources.

I’m passionate about communicative language teaching and love sharing Italian culture and traditions to bring the language to life for my students.

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Italian Language and Literature from Ca’ Foscari University in Venice. To keep my skills up to date, I’ve completed Italian teaching courses for non-native speakers at the Universities of Perugia and Venice, as well as a Certificate III in Education Support from TAFE NSW (Meadowbank campus).

Before teaching, I worked in Italy for 15 years in the human resources sector, mainly as a recruitment consultant and counsellor. Teaching is a natural fit for my background and interests, and it allows me to continue connecting with people through my native language.
