Italian Beginners Next Step (A1) Evenings

Course Overview

Build on your Italian language skills and elevate your proficiency!

Continue your exciting linguistic journey with interactive lessons and practical applications, ensuring a seamless transition to the next level of fluency.

A course for those who have completed at least 4-5 terms (64-80 hours) of Italian.

The focus will be on language in everyday situations, useful vocabulary and grammar and some cultural immersion. The course is enriched with audio-visual resources to consolidate the concepts presented and to discover cultural aspects of Italy. Students start speaking Italian from day one, practicing what they learn through role plays and conversation in class.

Course Breakdown

This outline provides an overview of what may be covered during the course; however, changes may occur based on various factors and the needs of the class.

Week 1: Revision of the material previously covered.

Week 2: Definite articles: recognition, form, and use
Culture: An Italian city – for example, Florence: brief history, famous places, basic vocabulary.

Week 3: Indefinite articles: recognition, form, and use
Culture: The history of Tiramisù – recipe, ingredients, and tradition.

Week 4: Partitive articles: recognition, form, and use
Culture: The Italian shopping ritual – fresh products, famous markets, and images.

Week 5: Nouns: gender and number
Culture: The Italian family – vocabulary, family structure, photos, and family tree.

Week 6: Nouns: structure and different types of nouns
Culture: Jobs in Italy – common jobs today and traditional professions.

Week 7: Qualifying adjectives
Culture: Italian music – describing singers, bands, and music genres with simple adjectives.

Week 8: Degrees of adjectives
Culture: Italian fashion – using comparatives and superlatives to compare clothes, colors, and styles.

Term Dates

Term 1 runs from Tuesday 4 February to Wednesday 26 March (depending on the class you attend).

Term 2 runs from Tuesday 29 April to Wednesday 18 June (depending on the class you attend).

Term 3 runs from Wednesday 23 July to Tuesday 10 September (depending on the class you attend).

Term 4 runs from Tuesday 14 October to Wednesday 3 December (depending on the class you attend).

Course Outcomes
  • Consolidate basic Italian grammar and vocabulary.
  • Recognise and correctly use articles, nouns, and adjectives in simple sentences.
  • Apply gender, number, and degrees of adjectives.
  • Expand vocabulary on everyday and cultural Italian topics (food, cities, family, work, music, fashion).
  • Understand short texts and describe people, objects, and places in Italian. Develop cultural awareness of Italy through readings and practical activities.

Sophia Emmanuello

Born in the Eternal City, Sophia is a Montessori teacher with a degree in Oriental Languages and Cultures.

During her study and research travels in Asia, she developed an educational outlook enriched by diverse cultural perspectives.

Over the past several years, she has taught Italian both as a first and second language, to children and adults in Italy and abroad.

These experiences have shaped a flexible and respectful teaching approach, informed by Montessori principles and grounded in a deep curiosity for global educational philosophies.

She applies the Montessori method to teaching Italian, fostering autonomy, curiosity, and active engagement in every learner.
