Italian Intermediate (A2)
Course Overview

This course is organised to be interactive and a variety of engaging methods will be used including exercises, audio-visual aids, games, role playing to facilitates learning and opportunities for listening and speaking practice to make the experience more enjoyable and effective.
Prerequisite
To start an A2 Italian course, you must have completed A1 basic communication skills.
Essential A1 Grammar Checklist to Start A2:
Present tense (regular/common irregulars) passato prossimo (with avere/essere), gender/number agreement, and definite/indefinite articles. Key areas to master include possessive adjectives, prepositions, basic reflexive verbs, and using c'è/ci sono.
Transitioning into A2 Topics:
Once confident in the above, you will move into the imperfect tense (imperfetto), distinguishing between passato prossimo and imperfetto, using the particle ci, and expanded imperative forms.
Objective:
Practice overall listening comprehension with an informal dialogue and the consolidation of learned structures and vocabulary.
Theme:
Talk about the past, describe physical appearance and personality.
Unit 2 of the Dieci A2 coursebook is titled "Come eravamo" (How we were). It focuses on the past, childhood, and personal descriptions:
- Topic: Talking about childhood, personal history, and past habits.
- Vocabulary: Descriptions of personality and physical appearance (e.g., socievole, timido, biondi, ricci).
- Grammar: Primary focus on the Imperfetto (imperfect tense) to describe the past.
- Functions: Describing people and situations in the past, comparing "then" and "now".

Dieci A 2 Dieci A2 by ALMA Edizioni is a communicative Italian course designed for adult learners. It features 10, two-page lessons covering grammar, vocabulary, and culture, complete with a sitcom-style video course, audio, and exercises. It focuses on practical, everyday language to build fluency.
The book is ideal for building confidence in everyday situations, focusing on "living and thinking in Italian".
Note: We recommend purchasing the textbook once the class is confirmed to be running by the Centre.
Course Breakdown
Week 1 and 2 :
Revision through a guided conversation and interactive activities aimed to use the vocabulary and grammatical structures studied during the previous units with a special focus on unit 1 Dieci A2:
Week 3,4,5, 6, 7:
Unit 2:
- Talk about the past, describe physical appearance and personality.
- Grammar: the imperfect; the comparative of majority, equality, minority; conjunctions: either... that, or... or, neither...nor
- Communication: use time expressions
Week 8 :
- Interactive group games, videos

Term 2 runs from Friday 24 April to Friday 26 June (10 week course)
Term 3 runs from Friday 24 July to Friday 11 September
Term 4 runs from Friday 16 October to Friday 4 December

Lara Toffolon
My name is Lara. I’m originally from the Venice area and have been living in Sydney since 2015. I hold both Italian and Australian citizenship.
I’ve been working as an Italian tutor for the past seven years, collaborating with a local language school and teaching both group classes and one-to-one lessons, in person and online. I create dedicated lesson plans to support learners at all levels in a positive, engaging, and motivating atmosphere. My teaching is interactive and student-focused, drawing on a wide range of materials, online platforms, and digital resources.
I’m passionate about communicative language teaching and love sharing Italian culture and traditions to bring the language to life for my students.
I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Italian Language and Literature from Ca’ Foscari University in Venice. To keep my skills up to date, I’ve completed Italian teaching courses for non-native speakers at the Universities of Perugia and Venice, as well as a Certificate III in Education Support from TAFE NSW (Meadowbank campus).
Before teaching, I worked in Italy for 15 years in the human resources sector, mainly as a recruitment consultant and counsellor. Teaching is a natural fit for my background and interests, and it allows me to continue connecting with people through my native language.
