Wadaiko Rindo Sydney Taiko Drumming

Experience the energy and joy of Japanese taiko drumming in a warm, welcoming, and hands-on workshop.

Led by Akiko, a prominent leader and teacher with Wadaiko Rindo Sydney and more than 20 years of taiko experience, you will discover the power of wadaiko through rhythm, movement, and ensemble playing.

You will begin with a gentle warm-up to develop posture, balance, coordination, and safe bachi (drumstick) handling. Then you will move on learning the fundamental taiko strokes and exploring how to create a clear, strong sound. Through guided call-and-response exercises, you will build simple rhythms, practise accents and dynamics, and experience the satisfying energy of playing together.

As the session progresses, you will bring these skills together to learn and perform a beginner-friendly taiko piece. You will practise keeping a steady pulse, listening and responding to others, following cues, and working as an ensemble to create a powerful and unified performance.

By the end of the workshop, you will have developed fundamental taiko drumming techniques, improved your coordination and rhythm, and gained confidence in maintaining steady timing and playing with others. You will also discover how changes in accents, dynamics, and pauses can shape musical expression.

Two sessions available

Session one from 1.30pm to 3.00pm

Session two from 3.00pm to 4.30pm
